Overview
Geofencing lets you automatically send wallet pass notifications to customers when they enter a specific location of your choosing. Use it to remind customers of your store location in high-traffic areas or when they're nearby, drive visits with timely offers, and build brand awareness and loyalty.
In this article, you'll learn:
What geofencing does and where it works
How to set up geofence locations
How relevant text and macros work
Answers to common questions about Apple's limits, privacy, and reporting
Prerequisites
Before getting started, ensure you have:
Owner or Operator permissions in your AIQ Dashboard
Pro+ Marketing plan - geofencing is included at no additional cost on this plan
Wallet Pass set up and active for your store(s)
Note: Before placing a geofence, confirm the location complies with your state and municipal cannabis advertising rules. AIQ does not validate geofence coordinates against these regulations. When in doubt, consult your compliance team or legal counsel.
How to Set Up Geofences
1. Navigate to Geofencing settings
Go to Settings > Wallet Pass > Geofencing
2. Select which store to edit
Under Currently Editing, choose Default or a specific store location. The Default option will trigger geofence notifications for customers who do not have a favorite store selected in their profile. If a favorite store is selected for the customer, the geofence(s) associated with that specific store will trigger the notification. Each store can have its own set of geofences.
3. Create a new geofence
Click Create to open the side drawer.
4. Name the geofence
Give the location a recognizable name (e.g., "High Street Location" or "Downtown Foot Traffic"). This name is for your reference only and isn't shown to customers.
5. Enter the location
Start typing an address in the location field. An autofill dropdown will appear β select the correct address to center the geofence on that point.
Note: Apple controls the geofence radius (approximately 100 meters around the point you select). You cannot adjust the size or shape.
6. Add relevant text
Enter the notification message customers will see when they enter the geofence. You can use macros to personalize the message.
Warning: If a macro can't be filled for a specific customer (e.g., missing first name), they'll receive a generic fallback: "Stop by and say hi!"
7. Save and repeat
Save the geofence. Repeat steps 3β6 to add more locations.
Editing and Deleting Geofences
Editing an existing geofence
Navigate back to Settings > Wallet Pass > Geofencing, select the store, and click any existing geofence to edit its name, location, or relevant text. Changes push to customer wallet passes within about 15 minutes.
Deleting a geofence
Hover over the geofence and click the three-dot menu. From here, you'll see an option to "Delete geofence"
FAQ
How long does it take for updates to go live?
Any geofence updates (creating a geofence, updating the location, deleting it entirely, or changing the message notification) should all be pushed to the customer within 15 minutes of saving the change.
Why didn't a customer receive the notification for the Wallet Pass?
There are a lot of factors that go into wallet pass notifications, most importantly, the user's specific phone settings. Location Access + Notifications for Apple Wallet must both be enabled.
Additionally, Apple's iOS decides whether to show each notification based on its own rules (battery, movement patterns, notification frequency, etc.). There's no guaranteed delivery, and Apple does not publish the exact throttling logic. If the issue is widespread, contact AIQ Support.
Can customers opt out of geofencing?
Yes. Customers can disable location access for Wallet passes on their iPhone: Settings > Wallet > Allow Location Access. Once disabled, they will no longer receive geofence notifications from any wallet pass.
Can I control the size of a geofence?
No. Apple sets the radius (~100 meters) and shape (circular). You only choose the center point.
Does geofencing work on Google Wallet passes / Android devices?
No. Google Wallet does not currently support geofencing. This feature is Apple Wallet only.
What reporting is available for geofencing?
Apple does not share geofence engagement data with third parties (including AIQ) due to their privacy policy. This means we cannot report on how many notifications were delivered, opened, or acted on. This is an Apple platform limitation, not an AIQ one.
How long does the notification last?
The notification will remain visible on the user's lock screen for as long as they are in the geofenced area and have notifications enabled. If they leave the geofence radius, the notification will disappear. If they re-enter the same geofence radius, the notification will reappear.
